Castro Theater
This innovative and distinctive instrument was designed by Allen Harrah and David Haggerty to meet the evolving needs of the Castro Theatre. Originally operating as a traditional movie palace, the theater has since been transformed into a versatile performance venue capable of supporting a broad range of programming.
The instrument’s original design incorporated both theater and classical wind-blown pipework as integral elements of its tonal architecture. During the renovation process, however, the size of the organ chambers was significantly reduced to accommodate infrastructure required for the theater’s expanded operational needs. As a result, the available space could no longer support the installation of the wind-blown pipework, requiring that portion of the design to be reconsidered.
Despite these changes, the organ has retained its remarkable versatility, functioning equally well as both a complete theater instrument and a fully realized classical organ. Designed to support a wide spectrum of musical performance, it will serve the Castro District community for decades to come while standing as an important cultural and musical resource for the greater San Francisco area.
